One of the biggest hurdles is sensor fusion—combining data from multiple sensors to create a cohesive understanding of the environment. Different sensors have different strengths and weaknesses. For example, cameras work well in well-lit environments but struggle in low light, while LiDAR is great for mapping but can be expensive and power-hungry.

AI algorithms must be designed to handle these differences and fuse the data in a way that makes sense. This is an ongoing area of research, and as AI becomes more sophisticated, we can expect robots to become even better at interpreting sensor data.

Another challenge is processing power. The more sensors a robot has, the more data it collects, and the more processing power is needed to analyze that data in real-time. This is why many autonomous systems rely on edge computing—processing data locally on the robot itself rather than sending it to a cloud server. Advances in AI hardware, like specialized chips for machine learning, are helping to overcome this limitation.
